Are We Really Not Safe Anymore?

by Daniel Chiam

Yesterday I read a story in Facebook about how 2 friends got hurt by 3 individuals who is trying to rob them (read here). Not long ago, I read from Audrey (fourfeetnine) about how two of her closes is nearly being robbed when going out to buy bread from a place which is only 5 minute walk from their home (read here). Anyone still remember the girl who was kidnapped at The Curve's car park and managed to escape? Attempted robbery at the One Utama's car park? Couple was assaulted right outside their home by robbers with parang?

I believe there are many more untold crime stories which you have heard or read from your own trustworthy source out there. I know I have since I am staying with an uncle who is apart of the Community Watch in our neighborhood. Car theft, snatch theft, day light house break in, robbers who awaited for their victim to come home late at night and many more.

I am not a paranoid person so to speak, but when much cases had happened right in our own backyard, fear will start to creep in and we began to be very conscious with our surrounding every time when we are out of the house. No offense, but I am very alert when I heard the sound of motorcycle nearing me. Of all the story and news that make known to me, most of the culprits are always motorcyclist. I even witness once how a few individuals on motorcycle is trying to force open the doors of a car when it stop for traffic light.

Seriously, I blame how this country is being managed to be the main factor of why so much crime is happening around us. People are being pushed to the very edge to try to survive the high cost of living with their petty income and also our police force has too many questionable roles.

Now what do you do when your life is being threaten, when someone is trying to rob you or how to avoid your car from being smashed to take your belongings? What I am about to share here is just merely a suggestion and should only be done accordingly with the circumstances that you are in.

Nothing is 100% guarantee here but I do hope the tips will be a great help to you and hopefully you will not have be in any bad situation to apply any of it. Let's stay safe people!

1. Scream your lungs out
If you sense any threats is coming your way just scream for help as loud as you can. Guys, its not a shame to scream like a girl in desperate situation. Better keep your life rather than your pride.

2. Run to safety
Try to familiarize the safe zone of the place that you are visiting. Security guard, emergency button, cctv or places that is crowded.

3. Stay calm and look for opportunity to escape
If you were being captured, being held from behind or when a knife is being pointed at you, just try to stay calm, be alert and look for opportunity to escape, run and scream!

4. Throw away your belongings
If the robber(s) is asking for all your belongings, instead of handing it to them, throw it to ground and preferably a distance where they need to go and get it. It helps to create an opportunity for you to escape, run and scream!

5. Don't keep your belongings where its visible in the car seats
When driving, make sure you DO NOT put your belongings on the passenger seats where its visible for people on the outside to see. If you do, you are just merely creating reason for them to smash your car window and take your belongings.

6. Always lock all the doors of your car
As soon as you are in the car, lock all the doors. Do so even when you are driving. Don't make it too easy for those evil maniac to get your

7. Be alert of your surrounding
Like I said, I am very sensitive to the sound of motorcycle. When I walk, I will try to avoid walking too near to the street where motorist could reach for me. If you are walking, always walk opposite of the incoming traffic so you could at least know what's coming toward you.

8. Never walk alone
If you are a Liverpool's fan, then you will never walk alone! Haha, I thought a lil' joke might cheer things up. Seriously, if possible, please do not walk by yourself. Always have somebody to accompany you and guys, be a gentleman and walk the girls to their car or to the front door of their house.

Do let me know if you have any other suggestion to keep yourself safe from becoming a victim at the comment box below. Agree to disagree are most welcome too. It's best that we share information to keep each other safe.

  1. The situation is getting worst where we have to constantly be alert whenever we're out of the house (actually at home also need to be alert since house break ins are frequent nowadays). My friend who came back from UK did say that it's a total different situation there (except for some areas). Just hope something can be done to curb all these issues, to release us from constant fear.

  4. Sad to say that being alert is quite useless. Few years back when I got robbed, I already knew something wrong when the motorcycle that came my way did not on the lights but it was too late to run. I can never outrun a motorcycle LOL
